Primo Festival Del Jazz, Pescara, Italy, 1969

Pescara was an Italian city on the Adriatic side. This was an international festival, and I was a member of the Philly Joe Jones group. Playing with Philly Joe was great, because as you played you got transported into the Miles Davis feeling. It was a nice rapport, and it was great having Isla Eckinger on bass, who really dug Paul Chambers. Jones did not come on as a guy who had to show he was in charge, he was more about everyone making music. And he was so empathetic. When you would comp something, he would pick it up immediately. He showed that on albums with Red Garland, too.
